"Staff travelling in uniform"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary

(as other),

I was travelling home from work last week when I saw nursing staff heading for a shift change at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. This is not unusual as I am usually headed for home about 7pm. However, this was a very warm day and I saw at least 4 nursing staff (staff nurses and clinical support workers) heading too and from work in full uniform. These uniforms were not covered and one of them was walking a dog.

Can you confirm if this is the usual practice for nurses at GRI or are staff expected to change at work and are changing facilities available? I am concerned that this does not meet infection control standards

Dear Hot and Bothered

Many thanks for posting on Care Opinion.

I have shared your post with the Associate Chief Nurse for Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has a Staff Uniform and Dress Policy which staff must adhere to. This policy states that if changing facilities are available, staff should not wear their uniform travelling to and from home. Unfortunately, not all areas have access to changing facilities.

The policy also states that ‘All staff should not undertake activities in public such as shopping whilst wearing their uniform except where such activities form part of their duties. Uniforms should be covered when travelling to and from work, particularly when using public transport.’

Staff also receive advice regarding laundering of uniforms for infection control purposes. Staff also wear protective equipment when carrying out duties, therefore minimising the risk of infection.

Best wishes

Nicole
