"The care I have had has been amazing"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Dermatology

(as the patient),

I have had psoriasis for over 50years since I was 7years old and have lived in three different regions in Scotland where I have seen many dermatologists. As you may or may not know psoriasis is a miserable condition affecting you physically and emotionally and in turn results in debilitating your life in ways most people who have never experienced or had this condition can only imagine.

My past experiences with dermatologists were the usual prescribed creams and ointments I also tried alternative therapies and diets to no avail. When I met Dr Zamiri I could not believe how interested she was in me and how my skin condition had and was affecting me I truly felt listened to for the first time in my over 50 years of having this condition, I had just learned to live with it until Dr Zamiri told me you don't have to, we discussed medication I had never been offered this before and tried a couple, combining ointments and creams. I also watched what I ate and drank with some results, but the medication made me very ill in other ways and my skin didn't improve as much as we would have liked.

Dr Zamiri didn't give up on me and we discussed another drug. It takes a lot of getting used to, but I responded quite quickly the results are amazing and my life has changed thanks to Dr Zamiri and her fabulous team at Crosshouse.

I cannot tell you the affect this condition has had on my life and my family, my Mum who is in her 80's said to me recently " I told you to never give up hope"! I know this drug is expensive as most are, it has an initial period of adjustment which may or may not be tolerated if you can tolerate the first 4months it is truly worth it and you must take it at the prescribed time, if this had been available all those years ago think of the savings the NHS would have made on prescribing me most of my life. Dr Zamiri's care and devotion to her work is to be commended! I would also like to thank her team of specialist nurses for their care attention even the pharmacists at the hospital take time to time to ask how the medication is affecting me. The care I have had has been amazing and I want to thank everyone involved including my GP Dr McGregor and her staff team.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say this.  No-one can know, only me I suppose, how much the care I have had means to me and my family and very dear close friends.

Dear Elainemac

On behalf of Dr Zamiri and the Dermatology nursing team I would like to thank you so much for taking the time to post your positive feedback. It is very much appreciated and gives the whole department a boost. I will also take pleasure in sharing your post with the Pharmacy department and the wider team.

You are so right that unless you or a loved one has a skin condition it is often misunderstood and underestimated how it affects every day life. Your post will give hope to others not to give up with treating their Psoriasis as we have newer treatments available now, although sometimes it can be trial and error to find the correct one for each individual as you rightly point out not everyone can tolerate treatment.

Wishing you all the very best with your health now and in the future

Sandra Hanlon

Thank you Sandra I truly hope this helps others not just patients but professionals also I have in the past felt written off, judged and undermined because I have psoriasis. I am aware of how people's ignorance can affect psoriasis sufferers and have endeavoured to educate people about my skin condition.

I think a positive attitude helps amongst other things sadly when this attitude is put to the test it is often shown by flare ups in the skin.

I am so grateful to have had the care I am receiving and hope that it continues to be positive I hope others don't give up it's not easy and it's great to know that new treatments are becoming available.

Thank you once again!

I completely agree that there are some health professionals who have little understanding of the condition. I presented at the national conference for Practice Nurses held in Glasgow a few months ago regarding Psoriasis and treatment options. The conference was well attended, there was much interest and lots of questions so hopefully this will improve knowledge and in turn the care people receive when attending the Practice Nurse for blood pressure checks, smear tests, travel vaccinations, etc. Slowly but surely awareness is being raised, I have even found myself sharing knowledge and giving education when attending my hairdresser about scalp psoriasis.

Kind regards

Sandra

That's great Sandra hairdressing is important and can often make you feel you have less choice it need not be that way I also have scalp psoriasis and can be embarrassing but I am fortunate that one of my closest friends for over 50yrs is a hairdresser so she is always on the look out and I give her tips for other clients to it's all good stuff! Thanks again Elaine
