"Fighting to get help"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital (Folkestone) / Cardiology

(as a relative),

My mum was waiting for a heart valve to be replaced she was rushed in at beginning of January. She spent nine weeks in royal after two operations had valve replacement but mum was still not right but they sent her home her speech walking all had been affected memory she had a stroke which has only been confirmed this week by a stroke doctor. The stroke doctor said she had slipped threw the net and it was wrong mum should have been referred straight from royal heart team to stroke team.

It has took us fighting to get mum help and we still are fighting and that is wrong. She has worked all her life had a family should be able to enjoy her life not suffer, it has been so hard for mum and all the family we just want mum well.

We noticed your post and thought you may be interested to hear about the work of the Stroke Association and how we may be able to support you. We are the leading charity in the UK changing the world for people affected by stroke.

We were very sorry to hear of your mum’s health issues and subsequent stroke and that you feel she didn’t receive good care. It sounds as if your family is still going through a difficult time. It may be helpful to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). PALS is an independent organisation, there to ensure that the NHS listens to patients, their relatives, carers and friends, answers their questions and resolves their concerns as quickly as possible. You can telephone PALS at the Royal Victoria hospital on 01227 783 145 or 01227 864 314 or email them at ekh-tr.PALS@nhs.net

Our Stroke Helpline is there for anyone who has been affected by stroke. You may want to know more about stroke and its effects, be looking for practical information and support, or simply need someone to talk to. The Stroke Helpline is open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm. The helpline number is 0303 30 33 100. You can also email us at info@stroke.org.uk.

We have a range of local services across the UK providing information, advice and support to stroke survivors and their families. You can find out if there is a service in your area by contacting the helpline or from our website www.stroke.org.uk/finding-support

Finally, you can also find lots of information about stroke on our website at www.stroke.org.uk. You can read about our services and download all of our publications free of charge. There is news about our campaigns to improve services for stroke survivors, national and local events and our research programmes. You can also join TalkStroke, our online forum where you can meet other people affected by stroke and share your experiences.

I hope that this is helpful and that your mum now gets the support she needs to make the best recovery possible.
