"I feel back to square one"

About: Crawley Hospital / Gynaecology East Surrey Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was due to have an urgent hysterectomy today, this was cancelled late yesterday afternoon due to lack of beds.

They brought by operation date forward 3 days, and I booked and paid for childcare I now longer need, taken time off work and my husband who is a firefighter, had used annual leave. To then have it cancelled has left us in a really awkward and difficult situation.

I am listed as an urgent case but cannot be rebooked until mid June. I've spoken with pals and also submitted a formal complaint. I am really hoping my next date isn't cancelled, I can't afford to be this ill for any longer. Also I am worried the cancerous cells (that are one of the reasons for needing surgery) could be spreading. All unnecessary stress at a very difficult time. I am so upset again tonight and also angry. Not just about the money but I have spent but the weeks of planning an organising and also mentally preparing. Now feel back to square one again.

I do have to say though my consultant has been very good and the gynae admissions lady was so lovely on the phone despite having to give me bad news. I think it is so unfair that urgent operations are being cancelled because there is no beds in a crazy stretched service and someone truly does need to save our NHS.

Dear Devastated

I am really sorry that your operation has been cancelled due to the current problems with bed capacity. I do understand how distressing this is, with the added stresses caused by having to undo and re-make arrangements for childcare.

We think we know who you are and I am hoping that Lynette our booking officer will be in-touch with you this week.

If not, please contact me by email so that I can try to move things along.

I am especially concerned about your comment regarding 'cancerous cells' as no patients with cancer or suspected cancer are being cancelled and I want to be sure we haven't overlooked something about your situation.

I apologise again and hope to hear from you.
