"Maternity care in ward 50"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Maternity care (Wards 47, 48 & 50)

(as a service user),

The care I received from the staff in ward 50 was fantastic - they were all very friendly and kind.

The only negative was that the number of visitors at each bed wasn't monitored, and a couple of times some of the other ladies in my room had over 10 people visiting at one time. It was a bit overwhelming and noisy and I don't think should have been allowed. Also, one night a lady's husband stayed until 10: 30pm. We were the only 2 patients in the room that night and the door was closed. I found it a bit intimidating. I think he should have been asked to leave earlier than that.

Dear Glasgow mummy

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and thank you for taking the time to feedback about your experience in ward 50.

I am delighted to hear that you found the care from the staff to be fantastic and that you were treated in a kind and friendly way. Our staff work very hard to ensure that they provide the best care they can to mums, babies and families and we are delighted to hear that this was your experience.

In relation to the issues you raise around visiting times and numbers of visitors, firstly please accept my apologies that these issues arose, causing you to feel uncomfortable and disrupted your stay in the ward. It is not normal practice within ward 50 for large numbers of visitors to be allowed at any one time and your feedback has been shared with ward staff.

You may also be interested to hear that all maternity units across NHS GGC have audited patient views in relation to visiting times and numbers and are in the process of using this feedback to inform a revised standard on the issues across all our maternity units.

With regard to the issue of a partners staying late in the evening in the circumstances you describe it is completely understandable that you found this situation uncomfortable. Partners are normally asked to leave earlier in the evening however where the need for a partner to stay for extended periods is identified we normally try to accommodate this in a way which does not cause any disruption or discomfort to surrounding mums. We have shared your feedback with the ward staff and requested that where these circumstances arise single rooms are used or doors are left open.

I hope that both you and your baby are doing well.

Regards,

Ellen McBrearty

Senior Charge Midwife, Ward 50
