"Not suffient attention regarding visible heavy..."

About: Princess Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

I attended A & E at approx. 8.00pm on Thursday 6th April 2017 as a result of heavy bleeding following surgery on my upper gums that day

Although I was seen reasonably quickly by the triage department I believe my situation was not taken seriously,

I informed the interviewer that I had surgery earlier that day and the bleeding had not stopped and continue to increase with time, I further informed the person that I took prescribed Rivaroxaban and any bleeding for what ever reason should be treated with caution and dealt with reasonably quickly

I was placed in a cubicle had a ECG, a blood sample taken and was informed it would be about a two hour wait for results I pointed out such a delay was putting me at risk and asked to see a senior medical person to explain my concern, none came, my situation got worse as time progressed, by now I had swallowed a lot of blood and my clothes were visibly covered in blood likewise the cubicle, I was in a distressed state despite this lots of staff sat around looking at their computer I was totally ignored, from time to time

I had to go to the desk area to ask for gauze pads to try to stem the blood flow which appeared to antagonise some who had to leave their chair to get them, despite my obvious appearance no one asked me if I was OK or if

I was being medically attended too, the wound was not examined by any trained or untrained person, by now blood loss was considerable I was feeling faint and sick was having to discharge the regular build up of blood in my mouth, at 11.30pm a medical person appeared did not introduce them-self as a doctor or examine me did not enter the cubicle just stood at the entrance and said there was nothing could be done to stop the bleeding and I would have to go to the Sussex County a decision made without any physical examination made by anyone, I experienced poor care that put me at risk which likewise had a severe impact on my health and welfare, the ECG and Blood test was totally unnecessary an examination would have revealed the gum needed stiches, despite my weakened state the heavy bleeding and the risk posed by the delay

I was left to make my own way to the Sussex County, not a very pleasant experience.

I am sorry to hear about your experience in A&E at Princess Royal, the lack of attention and care falls below the standards we would expect. I have contacted the matron for this area and he is sorry to read your experiences, will be sharing them with his staff to ensure that staff learn from this. If you would like to discuss this further please contact our Patient Advocacy and Liaison on 01273 664511 or pals@bsuh.nhs.uk, the team would very much like to do so.

Best wishes

Caroline Davies

Deputy Chief Nurse
