"Outstanding Care of a Learning Disability Patient"

About: Gartnavel General Hospital / Ophthalmology (eye problems) (Ward 1c)

(as a relative),

My brother's main carer is my 78 year old mother. He was admitted to Gartnavel Hospital, Ward 1c Opthalmology on Thursday and treated with the utmost of respect, care and understanding. As a family, we were all respected. Shifts were taken amongst the sisters and mum to stay with him as he was scared to be left alone. He felt vulnerable and insecure in an unusual environment, but within a short period of time, he settled and was feeling safe and secure and this could not have happened without the EXCEPTIONAL CARE, LOVE and UNDERSTANDING displayed by the whole team on Ward 1c.

He wasn't treated as a patient with a Learning Disability, he was treated as an ordinary patient, he was treated as himself.

Words cannot express the enormity of what has been achieved during the last few days during his stay in hospital, his journey will be a difficult one but with the support he has received, we know he is in the safest of hands.

From the very bottom of my heart, thank you so, so much.

You are all amazing stars and although you may not be told often enough, you make such a difference to the lives of many people and their wider family networks.

Dear County Mum

I am sorry to read that your brother had to be admitted to hospital.

Thank you very much for your kind words and praise regarding the staff in Ward 1C at Gartnavel General Hospital. It is heartening to read that your brother was treated as an individual and with the utmost respect, care and understanding.

I am also pleased to read that the staff understood the importance of family members being able to stay with your brother to provide reassurance and comfort in an unfamiliar environment.

I will make sure that the staff receive a copy of your post.

Please pass on my best wishes to your brother and your family.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Update posted by County Mum (a relative)

Thank you for ensuring that the staff are recognised for this outstanding service delivery. Patient Care is the centre of everything the NHS does and knowing he is being treated fairly, regardless of his limitations, makes us all feel secure that his emotional and mental well being is as important as his physical well being. Families like ours depend on nurses and services like Ward 1c. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.
