"Lack of respect for dignity in ultrasound waiting room"

About: Dewsbury & District Hospital / X-ray and Scans

(as the patient),

I came for an ultra sound appointment last week, I gave my name in at reception and was then taken to another smaller waiting room further down the corridor.

The staff member called me through and asked me to strip from the waist up including my underwear and to put the gown on provided, this was not said discreetly so the other patients sat in the waiting room could hear what was being said. The gown provided was open at the back so therefore made me very exposed and I was then told to take a seat back in the same waiting room with other patients which included males and of which I felt very embarrassed. I was them made to sit in the mixed sex waiting room for nearly 10 minutes with members of the public also walking up and down the corridor until they called me through.

I can not complain at all about the appointment itself as the sonographer was lovely and friendly who explained everything to me throughout the appointment. After the appointment I had to walk through the same small waiting room again with the same male patients sat there so I could get changed out of the gown. I just feel there was no respect for dignity and in these circumstances I think separate waiting rooms should be provided and also not on a corridor where the public are walking up and down.

I have to go for another scan next month and I am totally dreading it due because of how I felt at the last appointment.

Dear Redface

I have now received feedback from the Trust Group Radiology Manager. She, too, sends her apologies, and advises that this is an issue that she aware of. Changes in practice are being considered with a view to addressing the circumstances you encountered.

Thank you once again for your helpful comments.
