"Mixed experience with gastroenterology"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Gastroenterology Queen Elizabeth Hospital / General surgery Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I have been attending this hospital over the past two years starting with the gastroenterology department then sent to the surgery department in the care of Mr Taribacil, he was the most caring and understanding person I have encountered within this system and at all times he listened which to a person who has unexplained pain really helps. I had plenty of test that came back normal and I had lost a good deal of weight along the way, I then started to feel better so was discharged but he was the kind of person who should be recognised for his compassion,

I was away from the department for just six weeks when it started up again and I lost my appetite again and I had an appointment that was pending from when the doctor in gastrenterology first referred me, I found at my appointment they were negative with me due to the fact I had tests done recently but I knew that I was unwell but they said it would settle and no need to have camera again.

I left the hospital feeling short changed and they said they would see me in four months. I became unwell I could not even swallow water as my gullet and stomach were on fire and acid was dreadful so I rang the receptionist who said there were no earlier appointments so I asked if there were any cancellations could I be put on the list. They said ring up on a Monday and see if I could see if anyone has not turned up, I could not stand the pain so rang again and this time the receptionist said the gastro doctor wants you have the camera, I waited another three weeks in agony when finally I had the endoscopy. David who did the procedure was really fantastic made me feel really relaxed and confirmed I had inflammation of the oesophagus and small ulcer and told me to take double dose of tablets. I felt relieved because I knew I had a problem. I went up to the department with a thank you card and some chocolates for him and the nurses as they were brilliant.

I went back to my gastro doctor after there was a cancellation to my great relief, I told them that I thought they were negative towards me. They said they were very sorry and then they looked at my report and said you have a problem they said the biopsies indicated inflammatory bowel and adhesions, I had a ct scan and am waiting to see them again for the findings. I have to say this has been a very painful four months and I have still got problems some relief in the gullet. I wanted to explain and compliment the people as I know they have a tough schedule. the downside to me is the length of time it has taken and still I never have a day without pain so obviously this problem does not seem to be abating. I never abuse the system but I feel when like myself people living alone it is difficult.
