I had an appointment for a hernia operation in day surgery.
I accept emergencies will always take precedence, but the way staff left me completely abandoned without any means of summoning help left me very disappointed.
At first, one nurse took me aside to check blood pressure and vitals.
Fair enough.
Then, the nurse came out and spoke to my dad who had brought me to say that once I was on the ward, he might as well leave, and the ward would contact him when I was well enough to come home.
A different nurse then called me inside.
My dad, not unreasonably, thought I was being called to be prepped for surgery, and left - with my phone and money for safekeeping.
Then the nurse told me my surgery was being cancelled due to an emergency.
I had no means to call dad back.
The receptionist in day surgery was not very helpful.
I ran full tilt from Day Surgery to Whinpark entrance, but to no avail.
I'm afraid I did rather lose the rag and have a bit of a rant at the front desk, who very begrudgingly allowed me one phone call to my mum to come and get me.
Why was my dad not allowed in with me the second time when the nurse was telling me surgery was cancelled?
Surely my driver is allowed to know if I plans have changed.
No communication whatsoever.
