"Patients who travel a long distance"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / General Medicine

(as the patient),

Patients who have to travel a long distance and are not allowed to drive after their treatment should be near the top theatre list because it is very unfair to make the person driving the patient wait 5 or 6 hours for them to come out. Those who live locally can have their driver come home and come back when ready. Having repeatedly asked/suggested to them about this, still at the end of the list.

Dear Gold650,

I have now spoken with the Assistant General Manager for Surgery regarding your suggestion and can provide some further explanation as to how theatre lists are determined.

The Assistant General Manager explained that there are a number of factors that are taken in to consideration when finalising theatre lists. He explained that patients are prioritised by the Consultant and Anaesthetist and the order of the list is informed by that process. In doing so, they have to take into consideration various clinical factors.

The Assistant General Manager did advise that we can consider placing a patient at their preferred position on the list, but unfortunately this isn't something we can guarantee for the reason given above. He also explained that some patients travelling longer distances request to be later on the list to avoid having to leave home too early in the morning. We therefore have to consider theatre lists and patient placement on a case by case basis.

I appreciate the challenges and frustrations patients can face when having to travel long distances for appointments and procedures. I also understand how difficult it can be for friends and relatives who may have to wait around for several hours. Should you have any such appointments in the future, it is worth discussing with us whether we can accommodate your preference for an early position on the theatre list and we will try to accommodate you if that is possible.

Thank you once again for taking the time to share your views.

Kind regards

Emma Murphy
