"Travel clinic"

About: NHS Ayrshire & Arran

(as a carer),

Appointment made in advance with travel clinic, as GP practice would not give Rabies injections x 3. Unable to get the injections due to staff shortages at travel clinic, now need to go on 3 occasions to Glasgow. I think that within NHS A&A there needs to be a standard approach as some GP surgeries will give Rabies cover and some do not. We still needs Rabies cover. Can A&A help.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Amyjade,

This is a nuisance and I can appreciate the logic of your post. Like many things, this is not as simple as it is logical unfortunately. GP practices are independent contractors and as such, make a quite a lot of decision such as this.

I have passed your post to the Primary Care management team for their information. I also wonder if you have made a suggestion via the GP practice feedback process (I am fairly sure there is one for each GP practice).

On a plus note, I can save you a trip (or three) to Glasgow. There are some Pharmacies in Ayrshire and Arran that provide travel clinics where you can get the inoculations you require. If you want to contact me on eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or call me on 01563 826222, I can pass the information about one I am aware of. I am not publishing this for fear of upsetting other Pharmacists that I am unaware of that also provide this service. You could also ask your local Pharmacists. While these Pharmacists are also independent contractors, they have selected to provide this service but it will incur a cost.
(I 'googled' the issue and found some information there too. I clearly can't vouch for any information you get through this route).

Thank you so much for raising this with us, I am sure other people will have come across this situation too and I hope this has been helpful.

Kind regards and have a great holiday when it comes,

Eunice
