"The staff were excellent although in hindsight I wish someone had spoken to me"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 1 (Emergency Medical)

(as a relative),

My husband was having trouble breathing and as it was Saturday I called NHS 24.

The call handler was patient as was the nurse I was transferred to and she arranged an ambulance very quickly. My husband was taken to A&E where he was looked after by a lovely young Irish Dr.

He was given intravenous antibiotics and oxygen and transferred to Admissions one. He was probably not a good patient and anxious to get home. He was discharged the following day and given an ECG prior to discharge and this was normal.

The staff were excellent although in hindsight I wish someone had spoken to me. The following day he was very tired sleeping most of the day.

At 10 pm I took him through a drink and discovered he had suddenly and unexpectedly died. I wish I had insisted he be kept in hospital although I suspect it would have made no difference.

Dear Granny

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your husband's contact with the Health Service. I was so sorry to hear that your husband died unexpectedly; this must have been a dreadful shock for you. Please accept my sincere condolences.

It is very kind of you to provide positive comments about staff at such a difficult time.

It sounds like it might be helpful for you to talk to some one about this episode of care. It is not unusual to have questions at this stage and I know the clinical team would be very keen to speak to you directly.

Please contact me directly if you wish to meet with a member of staff. My number is 01592 648153.

Kind regards

Louise

Dear Granny

Thank you for your posting on Patient Opinion. I am really sorry to learn that your husband passed away and I do appreciate that this will be a difficult time for you and your family.

I note your comment in relation to your husband remaining in hospital, although you do suspect this may not have changed the outcome. It is always very difficult for loved ones to know what would have been in the best interests of the patient at such a time.

Your story is very complimentary for all of the staff involved in your husband's care and, at this particularly difficult time for you, it is kind of you to provide such feedback.

I do wish you and your family well.

With kind regards

Shona
