"Supporting lady with Autism"

I recently supported a young lady with severe learning disabilities and Autism to an appointment at Thirlestaine.

The staff were excellent and very helpful which I am sure helped to make the appointment as stress free as possible for all concerned.

They were extremely person centred by allowing us to use alternative entrance and exits and to avoid waiting in the waiting room with others as this would have been very difficult for the young lady concerned to have coped with given her Autism.

The staff at Thirlestaine involved the patient in decisions and by giving her information in a manner suitable to aid her understanding.

They were very accommodating, respecting her dignity and privacy at all times.

Often medical appointments and contact with health professionals is very difficult when supporting people with learning disabilities and they do not seem to understand, much less care about the issues and difficulties people with Autism/Learning disabiilties and their carers have.

This was certainly not the case at Thirlestaine and as a staff team we were very impressed with how the appointment was conducted by all involved.

Thank you very much and makes a refreshing and reassuring change!
