"Aortic valve and corona artery disease"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital / Cardiology

I was referred to the Cardiology department in February 2014 by my GP, Trafalgar Medical Practice, to check for Aortic valve disease. After initial consultation and a cardio echogram test, I was informed by the consultant that I would need the valve replaced probably within the next two years and that I would be monitored by the Cardiology Department until that time.

In June 2016 I was told that it was time for the valve to be changed and that I would be booked in to Southampton Hospital for the operation. An Angiogram was carried out in QA Hospital prior to referral to Southampton Hospital; this was also carried out in QA Hospital and coronary artery disease was also diagnosed. The consultant informed me that The operation would be carried out within 18 weeks; in fact it was carried out within 8 weeks. After successful surgery on 20 September 2016, I was discharged after 11 days from Southampton Hospital back in to the care of Cardiology, QA Hospital. Subsequently I have had two excellent half day education sessions on drug regimen, lifestyle, rehabilitation and future health maintenance within QA Hospital and have just finished 6 rehabilitation physical training sessions at the Mountbatten Centre supervised by QA nursing staff. My successful treatment is now complete and I have nothing but praise for the professional, seamless handling of my case by QA Cardiology Department. This was my first lifetime experience of NHS Hospital treatment and I have nothing but grateful praise for everything that has been carried out on my behalf by the NHS and remain amazed at how good the diagnosis, management and treatment of my condition has been. Thank you.
