"How do you get secondary mental health care in Nottinghamshire?"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Accident and emergency Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Adult Mental Health Services - Community (County)

(as the patient),

I have terrible periods of anxiety and depression which my GP believes now need input from secondary services. Despite this, someone who has never seen me before, "assessed" me and decided that it wasn't necessary. Instead they recommended I go back to a third sector service that had already said I was too sick for them to help. When things came to a head recently I was in A&E at Queens Medical Centre for over five hours waiting for a duty psychiatrist to see me. Sent home with a handful of sleeping tablets and tranquilisers (no psychiatric beds available anywhere) and a referral to Nottinghamshire Healthcare's crisis team I was hopeful that at last someone might listen to me.

How niave of me. On their first visit I was told, out of the blue, I had personality disorder and would require anti-psychotic medication. A few days later on their second visit I was told I was being discharged because there was nothing really wrong with me, I was just experiencing what every young person of my age felt.

Get on with life, go to a self harm charity for help if you need it.

My life is unbearable. Why will no-one listen? I feel like the Crisis Team employ people who have no comprehension of the symptoms of depression.

Dear magpie2,

Thank you for taking time to post about your recent experience of our services. I’m sorry you felt let down by the outcome of the meetings you had with DMP and crisis staff. I would like to understand a little more about your experiences so I can investigate fully to make sure you are given the appropriate support.

With this in mind please contact me either by email or call me on the number below so we can discuss in more detail.

Kind Regards

Jo Horsley

Thanks for taking time to get in touch. I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had difficulty getting the help you need and that you experienced long waits to see a psychiatrist when you visited our Emergency Department (ED). If you have any concerns about your time with us in ED I would be happy to talk it through with you if you’d like to. You can contact me on jane.newton@nuh.nhs.uk or call 0115 9249924 ext. 70181.

However, your concerns about access to care in the community and the Crisis Team fall under Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (who are our partners). You can contact their PALS team by emailing PALS@nottshc.nhs.uk if you’d like to talk to them.

Best wishes,

Jane Newton.

Matron, Emergency Department.
