"Undignified clothing and waiting area for CT scan"

About: East Surrey Hospital

(as the patient),

I needed a CT scan. I am a 67 year old woman.

I undressed in a cubicle, and was given 2 surgical gowns to wear, one frontwards and one backwards. They are short and skimpy and not intended to be worn in public. They left my legs bare, and I was very conscious of my bralessness. I had to put my bare feet into my outdoor shoes.

I was then walked along a corridor, and feeling very inadequately dressed waited outside the CT unit on a chair in a corridor. There were two men, similarly dressed, also waiting, one of whom made mildly inappropriate comments to me. It was an unecessarily unpleasant experience.

What is needed is to supply dressing gowns and slippers, and a more private waiting area. Surgical gowns are for wearing in bed or in an operating theatre. They do not provide dignified wear for patients in public areas. I would be happy to discuss with you what would be suitable.

Dear CT user,

Thank you for sharing your story. I would like to apologise to you for putting you in a position that left you feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable, it’s not something that patients should experience when they come for a diagnostic procedure such as a CT scan.

We are looking at how we can improve how we prepare patients for CT scans, both the processes in place and what they wear. If you are willing, I would very much like to meet with you to go through the points you have raised so that your views can be taken into account. Please email me: Diane.Mcfeeters@sash.nhs.uk. I look forward to hearing from you.

With best wishes,

Diane Mcfeeters
