"Every patient was treated with dignity and respect at all times"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Vascular Surgery (Ward 8)

(as a student nurse),

I have just spent the last seven weeks as a student nurse within ward 8. During this period of time I watched and learned from the staff there. This team really are unsung heros. Every patient was treated with dignity and respect at all times.

Despite the fact that this is one of the largest and busiest wards in the hospital, staff were never too busy to sit and hold someone's hand if they were feeling afraid or lonely. They have a passion for their job and compassion for their patients.

Once in a while, we come across nurses who stand head and shoulders above the rest, Lesley is one of those nurses. Nothing goes overlooked when it comes to patient care, she is diligent, efficient and compassionate.

She delivers proper holistic care to her patients with a smile and a laugh no matter what else may be going on within the ward. It was an absolute privilege to have worked as part of this team and to have had the opportunity to learn from them over the past seven weeks. I give my sincerest thanks.

Dear Student nurse 123

Thank you for taking time to feedback your observations from your placement in Ward 8. As the caring workforce of our future, I was delighted to see that you not only noted the busy activity and pressures on staff but also the value of person centered care and compassion.

I hope you will choose NHS Lanarkshire to work in when you qualify as I'm sure you have the same qualities you recognized in others.

Good luck with your studies and hope to be working with you soon.

Kind Regards

Gwen

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences on Patient Opinion. It is heartening to hear from someone who is training to be a nurse share their perspective on the care, compassion and professionalism of the profession they aspire to join.

Our workforce face challenges on a daily basis that few could imagine and they often do so with the highest level of professionalism drawing on the human factors which brought them into the role. We do however not always get it right but I am so pleased that you found that every patient was treated with dignity and respect at all times whislt in ward 8.

I am especially pleased to hear that the staff were never too busy to sit and hold someone's hand if they were feeling afraid or lonely. The care we provide should always be that which we would wish for our own.

Your admiration for Lesley is clearly testament to the role she has taken on as a professionally competent and caring nurse, mentor and leader.

Your feedback I am sure will be much appreciated by the team. I trust you find other such examples as you progress through your training and in time feel a desire to work with us here in NHS Lanarkshire delivering care with compassion and dignity.

Thank you once again Student nurse 123 for taking the time to submit this post.
