"Being a patient has put me off returning to Newark Hospital"

About: Newark Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I went for a procedure on my hip. I was shortlisted by my consultant who stated that there is not many risks due to my pregnancy and it should be successful. I was admitted to the ward and the nurses asked me for a pregnancy test, clearly they haven't read my notes. Then I was asked to change into a gown, but I wasn't allowed to keep my bra on "as I'll forget to take it off". I wasn't due down in theatre for another 2 hours & to be honest I doubt I'll forget! For the next two hours me and 3 other ladies were left in a cold bay and didn't see a nurse or a HCA. No one came to see if we were okay or if we wanted a drink, and we had to sit on chairs and under no circumstances not touch the bed. A nurse came to tell me that I should mention to the consultant that I'm pregnant as they haven't had chance yet. A consultant came to us about 2. 5hrs after we were first admitted, and introduced themselves to me. I stated I was pregnant and then in the entire bay, began speaking about my confidential information and condition, other staff didn't even stop him. I asked him if we could have this conversation elsewhere for the sake of my own dignity. The conversation continued where he did not produce any evidence based practice, just stating that if I were his wife he would not allow me to do this & scared me. I was not offered to call my husband to discuss this further. Then when I asked to leave, staff told me to stay for a cup of tea. I said no, I wish to go home. She further insisted, but I explained I was humiliated. I had to walk back to my bay to get changed, then I left.

I am angry beyond belief that no one communicated my pregnancy, that I had to wait for 2. 5hrs in a cold bay with nothing to drink or no reassurance and then horrified that the consultant decided to talk about risks in front of the bay. I'm a qualified nurse, and sadly being a patient for this procedure of minister ward has put me off returning to Newark Hospital for treatment. This is being escalated further.
