"Saturday night in A & E!"

About: St James's University Hospital / Accident and emergency

My father was taken to A & E on Saturday night as he had a urinary problem which needed attention and could not be done at his nursing home.

My father is unable to move, is doubly incontinent and has Ataxia with MSA.

He was put on a trolley without any pillows and I had to ask for blankets so he could rest his head.

His skin was looked at after two hours and he was told he would be getting a hospital bed in A & E to prevent any sores but this did not happen despite me asking again after 3 hours. The doctor in A & E could not re insert the catheter and dad was getting more and more anxious and disturbed - he had backache and was terribly uncomfortable.

After 5 and a half hours he was taken to a ward but they did not know whey he was there!!

I helped make his bed up so we could get him into a bed but it was not the correct mattress. He was discharged after being in hospital 15 hours and his skin is terrible. This is not the first time this has happened - dad has been in and out of this hospital over the past two and a half years and they have all his records so why can they not treat him with dignity and respect!!

Dear Debra

Thank you for taking the time out to write to us regarding your father's experience using our service. I was very sorry to read of the poor experience you feel he had whilst in our care and I apologise that we did not deliver care that met your expectations.

It would be very helpful and beneficial for our services and the care of future patients if you would discuss these issues further with the Trust’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS); this would also allow us to look into the matters you have raised in further detail.

Please call our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0113 2066261 or alternatively email patientexperience.leedsth@nhs.net

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

With kind regards

Rosie
