"Wexham Park Labour Ward"

About: Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust

My partner was admitted to Wexham Park during the evening of Saturday 12th November to give birth.

While the care we had was generally good, I have very serious concerns over basic levels of hygiene. The doctor overseeing the labour had a rasping cough, for which they were extremely apologetic each time they spoke with us. I find it incredible that a medical professional with an infectious condition, considers it ok to enter a delivery room without taking the simple & effective step of covering their face to prevent spreading infection.

The end result is that three of us- one of which a week old baby- now have a cough/ cold. I would therefore like to know what is Frimley Health's policy regarding taking sensible precautions to prevent staff from infecting patients.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

Congratulations on your new arrival.

I'm very sorry to read your comments, and I have sought the advice of both the Infection Control Team and the Occupational Health Team before responding to you.

There have been a lot of coughs and colds around and they do tend to linger for weeks even when they are not necessarily “infectious”. Staff are reminded as part of Trust induction and in teaching updates that they should cover their coughs and sneezes with their hands and then clean their hands (this is in our written guidelines too) and I apologise if this was not what you saw happening during your recent visit to Wexham Park.

We do use patient feedback as part of our training and so will include a reminder about “covering your cough and sneeze” in the monthly Infection Control Newsletter to all staff this month. The Occupational Health department offers flu vaccines to all staff during the winter months.

Best wishes to you and your family

Kind Regards

Claire Marshall
