"Poor care in accident and emergency."

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

From arriving at reception and being told to follow the green circles and sit on the chairs, after 15 mins or more we realised that maybe nobody knew we were there. I wandered around and asked where my son should go and eventually he was taken for assessment. From there we were taken to minor injuries and sat for 2 hours in a cubicle with no acknowledgement or update on what was happening.

There was no check on whether the patient was still conscious or in pain. I understand waiting times but the attitude and indifference of the staff was appalling. Eventually a nurse arrived to check my sons injuries and told us the cubicle was too crowded and could we leave. We felt like there was no ounce of care or compassion, very abrupt. What has happened to this service?

Dear ‘DS2016’

Thank you very much for comprehensively documenting yours and your sons experience in the Emergency Department. It was so disappointing to read of the negative points you raise relating to Attitude, waiting times and the abruptness of the staff. I appreciate that this must have made a difficult time even worse. I would like to apologise for the experience you had whilst in our Department.

For a patient to experience poor treatment in the department is unacceptable and I would like to assure you this is not up to the standard that staff aspire to.

We are very sorry that you were left feeling that your Son was not assessed in a timely manner. Your feedback will be shared with the ED staff. We do hope that your Son is making a speedy recovery.

We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your experience with you and you can contact the PALS Services on 01202 704886 if you would like to do this.

Regards

Matron
