"I should have seen a doctor immediately"

About: Royal Gwent Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

I recently had an accident on my bicycle, I was cycling around 15 miles per hour when I caught the back wheel of the bicycle in front. I fell off. My bicycle helmet was shattered and I had no recollection of the fall, or the half hour following it, apparently I cycle home with an escort.

Looking at my helmet and realising that I could not remember falling I decided to get myself checked out. I was triaged then waited 2 hours to see a nurse practitioner who carried out basic observations and tests and discharged me. I was surprised there were no x rays or other tests carried out.

Following discharge I started to experience dizziness so returned the next morning. This time I was put in the care of a Doctor, what a difference, he was quite concerned that no tests had been carried out the previous day. I was sent for a neck x ray, then put in a collar, following this an urgent CT was carried out on my head and neck. Fortunately nothing broken but advised that I had a bad case of concussion and was prescribed medication for the dizziness, advised to go straight back if symptoms worsened and given appropriate medical advice.

My concern is that following a fall at speed and a shattered helmet why wasn't I passed over to a Dr. and given the relevant tests at the time of the accident. I have to say that the treatment received by the Dr. on the second day was excellent.
