My Father has been to the memory clinic several times and just wanted to say the appointment we had today went really well.
This was a nurse led clinic, my Father was treated very respectfully, was not rushed and was made to feel at ease. This was important as visits to the memory clinic can be stressful, my Father was more at ease than when he was seen by a doctor.
When we arrived I gave the nurse a note as I wanted to be able to discuss my Father’s condition and future care without making him anxious and suggested that the nurse could call me at home. However, he settled my Father, made sure he was comfortable and relaxed and took me to a different area where we could have a more private chat.
The nurse explained the medication my father was taking and reassured me that this could be continued. He also gave me the number for social services should we need to contact them for help and support with my Father’s care. We had approached social services previously requesting hot meals for my father but this did not happen as my Father felt he did not need this service however they did offer us respite care.
On this visit I felt my Father was more relaxed because of the way in which the nurse had interacted with him, this made the whole appointment go well and was very helpful.
I understand Kingston Health Centre will be delivering this service in the future, there seems to be changes all the time regarding where and by whom the clinics are run. I hope future appointments are like this nurse led clinic.
