My husband who is a health care professional was admitted to Blackburn with severe renal stone pains.. A&E was fine and we kept pushing for a urgent CT Scan to be done as advised by my brother who is a doctor himself and has 16 years experience so he got taken to surgical triage where no nurses came to see how he was and no painkillers given.. The doctor eventually came and saw him after 5 hours of waiting.. The doctor advised that he needed to stay the night and will be transferred to the urology clinic and a ultrasound scan will be done first thing in the morning. Slightly satisfied that finally something will be done we let the doctor do as they wished as we were treated unfairly 2yrs ago for the same reason.. The following morning- in ward C22..The registrar came to see my husband and stated though my husband needs a urgent scan they believes he doesn't and organised an X-ray instead- my husband explained over again that he has had renal stones 5 times and renal stones do not show up on the X-ray and to send him for the scan as we were advised previously.. Completely disregarding his pain-the registrar still sent him for the X-ray.. After 4-5 hours of waiting, I went and spoke to the nurse in charge as I couldn't see my husband in such pain but thy were of no help and instead starting criticising my husbands and my brothers medical knowledge. All that my husband was given was paracetamol for renal stone pains and nothing more powerful to help with the pains.. It seemed as though the doctor or the nurses were brushing their job under the carpet. Eventually after waiting 7 hours we decided to self discharge but again the nurse criticised this and denied us the discharge therefore I demanded to see the registrar whom I was told wouldn't be on the ward until the following morning therefore the X-ray results won't be dictated until then too. Extremely upset and dissatisfied I came and told my husband this who was at the time speaking to my brother who is a doctor who advised that the hospital should have given a CT Scan as urgency and they had overlooked the urology guidelines. Funnily enough 20 minutes late another nurse informs us that the registrar would like to dictate the X-ray reaults to us- hold on.. I thought they went home?! Anyhow the doctor said exactly what my husband told them- no stones showed on the X-ray.. My husband tried explaining the pain he was in and why he wanted a scan as requested but they seemed to not care and instead started saying things along the line as 'I am a urology specialist I have studied renal stones I know what I am doing' but with all due respect you do not as you did not care about the pain your patient was in and instead you let your pride and ego get the better of you! We asked to self discharge as the paracetamol that they were giving him can be given at home- the registrar didn't seem bothered and said yes ok just go and then went away. Overall an appalling experience yet!!
