"Misdiagnosis of relative"

About: Raigmore Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a carer),

relative visited out of hour with high temp, stridor and neck swelling on 3 occasions -days apart. Nurse saw on first 2 occasions, relative visibly worse, treated with nebuliser with saline, no referral to medics despite no real diagnosis so. Although suggested throat infection. Saw doctor on third visit and admitted as emergency with acute epiglottitis, issue is not nurse didn't know, is she reached her level of ability, did what she thought may help. Relative 10 day inpatient on IV antibiotics. Need to be aware of our diagnostic limits.

Dear Lauriielee

I am sorry that your relative has had such a difficult time, it must have been a worry for both of you.

Thank you for contacting us on behave of your relative. I would like to look into this a bit more and feedback to the staff concerned in order to learn from the situation. If your relative would like to contact me direct on linda.kirkland@nhs.net, I would be happy to investigate. Alternatively if you e mail me I can send a consent form for your relative to sign giving me permission to look into it and communicate with yourself.

kind regards

Linda
