"True professionalism was shown all the time"

About: Trauma & orthopaedics / Orthopaedic National Treatment Centre

(as the patient),

I am in the national treatment centre at Kirkcaldy hospital, getting my right knee replaced due to athritis etc

About a month before my admission early November I was invited along to a discussion about what to expect when in the hospital

The 3 people that held the discussion were tremendous people as they were not only interesting as to what their jobs entailed I.e. on the ward or outpatients at the NTC centre they were all very friendly and made my mind more at ease as there seemed a very strong sense of caring as such in the way the nurses presented themselves

And true professionalism was shown all the time as it was more relaxed presentation as they sat around the table and talked about what the next steps would be from preparation of the shakes that are given to also making sure that plenty of water was being taken as that helps the recovery process also

Can’t fault the discussions as stated each person have their ways of working etc and I personally thought that this was a brilliant idea to hold these sessions as it was definitely reassuring in my mind and even listening to others that attended the meeting said they found it to be really helpful and Interesting

So when I came to being admitted for my knee replacement I knew exactly where to come and who to contact as the discussion meeting also gave a practice run as such so that also was helpful

So when I was admitted that day I found the person I spoke to at the reception area was not only friendly but extremely helpful as they explained where room I was to go to and then various people the consultant and the registrar and the nurse in charge etc all very professional and extremely helpful

After I had my surgery etc I was taken to recovery room then placed onto the ward

Yet again no complaints etc as not only did I find the ward staff so helpful etc I have been admitted to a room which I can’t complain as it’s kept well cleaned etc

The nursing staff are so friendly and supportive that I have no complaints about anyone that I’ve interacted with as they’ve been so helpful I can’t thank them enough

As I know that they are doing there job but all seem to go above and beyond I feel

Even when the cleaners come into the room to clean they to are very friendly and talkative and I thought this is great as many older people may not have visitors and the staff are really friendly etc so they feel at great ease as such

So on closing I can only say that this has definitely been a great experience so far as I’m still on the ward and as stated the staff here are in my eyes brilliant people

So hopefully people may read this review and I’d thoroughly recommend that if given the chance to attend a consultation meet and greet as I would call it…….they take up the opportunity as this certainly proves just how well people in a business operate as such

As not only knowledgeable but also the fact that they’re in this type of work for a reason and I know many don’t look forward to operations etc but if they were to come here I reckon they would find it very hard to find faults as in my eyes there is none to find

Keep up this great work that everyone does and it’ll hopefully get recognition this treatment centre and the whole of NHS fife deserves

Good morning

My name is Yvonne, I am the Senior Charge Nurse within the Orthopaedic Outpatient Department in the National Treatment Centre. Thank you so very much for taking the time to provide such wonderful positive feedback about your experience.

Get Set For Surgery is a new initiative we have been trialling for the past 3 months. The purpose of it is we want each and every patient to feel as informed and prepared as possible for their up coming surgery. The hope is that this will allow patients to feel empowered, reduce any uncertainties, give a detailed account of what to expect - including a visit to the ward environment and most importantly allow patients to prepare both mentally and physically before their surgery which in turn greatly improves recovery following surgery. To hear that we achieved this for you at this session is fantastic and shows me that all the efforts we have put into designing this session is paying off and extremely valuable to you the patient. Thank you.

As a team we strive to ensure all of our patients are treated in a calm and supportive environment and that your care is delivered in a professional manner. We work exceptionally hard making sure each and every patient is treated as an individual, is listened to, heard, involved in decision making of their care and is given care tailored exactly to their needs. I am delighted to hear that your experience has been all of these things.

Positive feedback really motivates us to keep working hard and continue to strive for clinical excellence. I will share your wonderful feedback with the staff who deliver the pre operative information session and the wider orthopaedic team. I am sure Briony, Aileen or Tanya will reply to you from the ward to personally thank you for your feedback of your experience in their care.

I hope you get home soon. I wish you well in your orthopaedic journey and look forward to welcoming you back to the National Treatment Centre for your future care and follow up.

Best Wishes

Yvonne

Update posted by moonxm69 (the patient)

Thankyou for the reply to my feedback and that you are sharing this with others

I’m now home after spending 3nights being cared for in the NTC ward

I’m glad that I was given the chance to provide feedback and took the opportunity to write about my experience whilst in the care of the fantastic nurses etc

Definitely hope that this opportunity remains and others take advantage of experiencing the opportunity to go along to the discussion session

As personally stated it was not only informative but it was rest assured communication of what to expect

The whole team involved in the NTC should be awarded as everyone of them showed professionalism and compassion during my stay after my knee operation and as stated I couldn’t believe how much information was provided at that session about the involvement of what to expect as it can be a daunting experience

and when it was over and done with the care and professionalism never stopped

I don’t think people fully understand the importance of what jobs people have in the NHS

And as I found out that those that do the operation are just as kind and caring and professional as those that clean the rooms when staying and recovering

So Thankyou for acknowledging my feedback and if I ever find myself having to get more operations etc at the NTC Kirkcaldy I certainly won’t be worried about it as I know first hand how great a place it is and how the staff really do go above and beyond

Dear Moonxm69,

My name is Tanya McBain, I am one of the charge nurses within the National Treatment Centre ward. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this absolutely wonderful feedback.

I am delighted to read that you had such a positive experience at our new initiative Get Set for Surgery. As Yvonne has mentioned above this is something we have been trialing recently. Once again as mentioned the aim of these sessions is for you to really feel as informed as possible for your upcoming surgery and reduce any of those concerns or worries that you may have prior to your upcoming surgery. It really does delight me to read that we were able to achieve this for you at your session. It is fantastic to see all the hard work paying off and I know that our staff who hold these sessions really are passionate about empowering patients with the most up to date and key information you need to know prior to surgery along with those post operative tips to help aid your recovery

I am so pleased to read that on the day of your admission that you were greeted with all of our friendly and helpful staff who all acted professional and were most helpful to you in what is usually a daunting morning for those awaiting their surgery that day.

As a team here throughout the ward and the full department we do aim to ensure that all of our patients have a positive, calming and safe environment to aid their post operative recovery and I am glad to read that from your post operative experience that all of our staff were able to be supportive throughout your journey.

I will pass this lovely feedback on to our domestic team who do a fantastic job of keeping our ward and rooms very clean. I am delighted that they were friendly and talkative and helped you feel at ease.

It is so lovely that you wrote this while you were staying with us and I see from your above response that you are now home and I hope recovering well at home following your surgery.

A massive thank you for this truly wonderful feedback and I hope this helps others who read this also. We look forward to rolling out our Get Set For Surgery to all patients hopefully as soon as we can. This kind of positive feedback helps our staff to continue to strive to provide the clinical excellence that all patients deserve throughout their journey.

On behalf of myself and the team here at the National Treatment Centre ward I wish you all the best in your recovery at home.

Best Wishes

Tanya
