"Staff member wouldn't let me out"

About: Radiography services / MRI Services

(as the patient),

Having an MRI in Daisy Hill Hospital in the prefab. Went in and everything was explained as I had never had an MRI before, was given a button to press if i needed to stop or wanted out.

Near the end i pressed the button as i had became very uncomfortable and sore. I was told there’s only a couple more minutes, i said no, please get me out, but i was ignored, i was left in the machine crying my eyes out and in pain because the staff member doing it wouldn’t let me out.

When the scan was over a different staff member came and asked if i was ok, they were completely unaware that they had refused to let me out, they couldn’t stop apologising and saying that it shouldn’t have happened. All the first staff member could say was there was only a couple minutes left...but that wasn’t the point, the point was i wanted out, i was in pain!

I am very sorry to read about your experience during your recent MRI scan. I understand how distressing this must have been for you and sincerely apologise that your request to stop the scan was not acted upon immediately.

Our staff aim to ensure that every patient feels safe, respected, and supported throughout their procedure. I are sorry that this was not your experience on this occasion.

The radiographers working that day have reflected on their actions, and whilst they felt they were acting in your best interests - trying to minimise any further pain or discomfort by asking to try and hold on (to avoid a much longer repeat scan), they accept they made an incorrect decision in this instance. They were upset to see the distress this caused

The incident has been discussed with the team involved and all staff have been reminded of the importance of responding straight away when a patient indicates they wish to stop.

It is with this in mind that I want to thank you personally for bringing this to our attention.
