"Outstanding support and care"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Paediatrics wards (19 & 20)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter, who is now diagnosed with RAS (seizure). We thought she was dying, she turned blue and stopped breathing. Went limp, we rushed her to A&E. She was taken immediately due to the severity of her reaction. She came round and we were taken into resus. The team in the department were awesome.

The doctor on call was very attentive and arranged the checks for her ASAP. She was checked a few times and sent for a CT scan. She is one year old and was very irritated and sad after having a canula. The CT team were brilliant with both her, and myself who was absolutely terrified of the machine. Allowed her mum to stay, during the process and made a difficult situation feel easy.

The nurses in the resus ward were an asset to the NHS. The care they gave to my daughter, my wife and myself was very very appreciated. They gave us the best chances to calm my daughter down as well as constant checks. All of which was being done whilst receiving verbal abuse from another member of the public. The composure and attitude of both the ladies was 11 out of 10 and both deserve the recognition for what can only be a very stressful night.

Thanks to the doctor, my daughter was sent to ward 19, where the care and attention was very much appreciated. The ladies on the ward were again very supportive and even had a bit of fun with me. As you can imagine the night and situation left me agitated and unable to rest so was trying to assist with moving beds etc. Of which the joke was made - Dae you want a job son. The small joke although might not seem like much brought a small light hearted moment to what was an absolute nightmare of a night.

We were then moved to ward 20 where my daughter again was checked given some ice cream which made her very happy.

She was given all due care and checks from the doctors. We were informed of the situation and what was happening all though out the night and day putting both my wife and myself at ease.

The final wee thing was seeing the dog. Jasper coming into the ward cheered up both my wee girl and wife. It also lifted the spirits of everyone in the ward. This is a fantastic idea and one I would love to see implemented elsewhere.

I cannot fault any staff who interacted with my daughter or family during the course of the night. The care and attention given to my family was second to none and I am eternally grateful.

Hi columbayp55,

Thank you so much for your very kind feedback on your daughter's care. It sounds like a very stressful experience but I am delighted to hear you were so well looked after by the team on Ward 19 and Ward 20 and were able to feel reassured by their care. I'm also glad to hear the ice cream and a visit from Jasper went down so well!

I am sure this will give the team a wonderful boost and I will pass your feedback on. I hope your daughter is recovering well at home.

Hi columbayp55,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback of your experience in our paediatric unit ward 19/20. It was lovely to hear that staff taking care of your daughter showed great care and compassion to not only your daughter but your wife and yourself. I loved hearing that the staff were able to cheer you up during what was a difficult time by some light-hearted jokes. Sometimes it's the little things that go a long way.

It was great that you felt throughout your stay with us that your daughter was monitored and you and your wife were updated continually throughout the stay.

Jasper is our wonderful therapet who visits monthly and it always provides such joy and happiness to children and their families, so it was lovely to hear that this was also your experience.

I will pass on your feedback to all staff involved in the care of your daughter and they will be thrilled to hear that they made such a positive impact on a daunting time for you all. I hope your daughter is recovering well at home with loved ones.

Warmest Wishes,

Stephanie

Senior Charge Nurse.

Dear Columbayp55,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. I can only imagine how frightening and overwhelming that night must have been for you and your family, especially seeing your little girl go through such a traumatic event.

Reading your message was incredibly moving. I’m so glad to hear that our team in the Emergency Department, Resus were able to provide the care, compassion, and reassurance you needed during such a critical time. Your kind words about the staff — from the doctors and nurses truly mean a lot to us all.

We know how important it is to not only treat the patient but to support the whole family, and it’s heartening to hear that our team helped bring moments of calm, comfort, and even a little humour during such a difficult night.

I’ll make sure your message is shared with everyone involved in your daughter’s care. Recognition like this reminds us why we do what we do, and it will mean the world to the staff who were there for you.

Wishing your daughter a smooth recovery and sending warm thoughts to you and your family.

With heartfelt thanks,

Julie.
