"It gave so much reassurance to my dad"

About: Mater Hospital / X-ray department

(as a carer),

I took my 90 year old father for an appointment to get his back x-rayed.  He's very hard of hearing and very fragile on his feet and can't walk very far.

Parking close to the site is an issue when he needs to attend anywhere because of his mobility, but thankfully we managed to get parked on the road outside the building and not too far for him to walk with his rollator.  Thankfully that was the biggest challenge.

When we got in to the hospital, Radiology was fairly easy to find. The place was spotlessly clean and the waiting room was good. We arrived a little early and the receptionist was so friendly and helpful! After a short wait, the radiographer called my dad. I went with him and explained that he had very poor hearing and mobility. She introduced herself to him and was fabulous with him and me.

She allowed me in to the x-ray room to help him in to position for his examination and wait with her behind the protective screen while it was done. It gave so much reassurance to my dad to have me there with him!

When we left, both the radiographer and the receptionist made sure they explained the process and when our GP would have the results, before wishing us well as we left.

Dear Dad's helper

My name is Bernie Carey and I am the site manager at the Mater hospital.Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am sorry to hear about the difficulties you faced accessing car parking while bringing your 90-year-old father for his x-ray. I completely understand your frustration with the current lack of close disability parking.

The hospital is undergoing essential works at the front of the building to restore the old structure and prevent ongoing water damage. While these works are much needed to keep the building functioning safely, they have unfortunately impacted on parking availability. Please be assured Dad's helper that restoring disability parking is a priority for us, and we do aim to reopen these spaces as soon as possible.

I want you to know that your concerns have been heard. We appreciate your patience, and if you need help in the meantime, please speak to any member of staff or security staff at the front barrier—they are there to assist you, including providing wheelchairs if needed.

I’m also very grateful that you highlighted the respectful, thoughtful care from our Radiology staff and the clean environment. It’s lovely to hear that your experience there was really positive and offered reassurance to you during your visit.

As site manager, I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by the current parking situation, and I thank you again for your kind words and understanding.

Kind regards

Bernie Carey
