Following surgery under general anaesthetic, which involved burning of internal tissue, cleaning, and stitches, I requested a fit note to cover my recovery period before leaving the ward. However, I was informed that, according to NHS protocols, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) is not required to provide fit notes (although they are the person disccharging patients) and that I must instead self-certify for the first seven days and thereafter request a fit note from my GP.
This has caused me significant distress and inconvenience, particularly as I have undergone more than 10 similar procedures over the past 14 years, often complicated by infections, and I am fully aware of the expected recovery process and its impact on my ability to work. On this occasion, a nurse refused to provide the fit note, a decision that I was told came under their authority by another nurse.
