I arrived in Jubilee ward at 7 30am & shown to my bed. There was a lengthy wait as I was last on the list but during this time I met the anaesthetist who gave me a choice of different kinds of anaesthetic & advice on what would work best for me. Because I self catheterise I was concerned I would not be able to do this immediately after surgery so to take that anxiety away I was catheterised.
Everyone was extremely kind & reassuring when I got back to the ward & I was given a drink & offered toast & then monitored regularly through the night. I had some difficulty in the morning starting exercises as I had lost sensation in my leg but was reassured it was temporary.
When it continued longer than expected I was taken for an MRI scan then an x-ray to rule out any serious problems. Constant attention from doctors, nurses & physios eventually discovered I had adopted a way of walking for the last couple of years (to enable me to retain mobility) & were not the muscles I needed now! I had to relearn to use the correct ones. This has impeded my recovery but I am improving every day & getting full support from the team.
I cannot praise my level of care highly enough from every member of the staff. They are kind, caring & highly trained & I look forward to getting my other knee done in due course.
I followed the My Mobility app pre op & will continue now I am home as it is really helpful & gives you all the information & exercises plus reminders that you need. My scar is much neater & smaller than I expected too!
