"I cannot praise my level of care highly enough"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I arrived in Jubilee ward at 7 30am & shown to my bed. There was a lengthy wait as I was last on the list but during this time I met the anaesthetist who gave me a choice of different kinds of anaesthetic & advice on what would work best for me. Because I self catheterise I was concerned I would not be able to do this immediately after surgery so to take that anxiety away I was catheterised.

Everyone was extremely kind & reassuring when I got back to the ward & I was given a drink & offered toast & then monitored regularly through the night. I had some difficulty in the morning starting exercises as I had lost sensation in my leg but was reassured it was temporary.

When it continued longer than expected I was taken for an MRI scan then an x-ray to rule out any serious problems. Constant attention from doctors, nurses & physios eventually discovered I had adopted a way of walking for the last couple of years (to enable me to retain mobility) & were not the muscles I needed now! I had to relearn to use the correct ones. This has impeded my recovery but I am improving every day & getting full support from the team.

I cannot praise my level of care highly enough from every member of the staff. They are kind, caring & highly trained & I look forward to getting my other knee done in due course.

I followed the My Mobility app pre op & will continue now I am home as it is really helpful & gives you all the information & exercises plus reminders that you need. My scar is much neater & smaller than I expected too!

Dear Ginibx24,

Thank you for taking the time to post your response following your knee replacement with us on Jubilee ward.

It is always lovely to receive such a positive feedback.

I am so sorry that you have struggled with the mobility after the operation and that the lost of sensation in your leg have impeded your recovery.

I am delighted to hear that you found every member of our team as being kind, caring, and highly trained and that you are improving your recovery every day and you feel well supported by our team.

I am also glad to hear that you are managing to do your exercises using My mobility app.

Everyone on the Orthopaedic Team strive to make patients stay as comfortable and reassuring as possible.

I hope that your post-operatively rehabilitation is going well, and may we all wish you a continued recovery and all the very best for the future.

I will pass on your kind words to the team and we are looking forward to see you again when you are getting the other knee done.

Kind regards,

Ana-Maria Bacsik
