"Nasal gastric feeding"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

We attended Wishaw General Hospital on the advice of our doctor as my husband was unwell. My husband is palliative and feeds through Nasal gastric. Due to the long waits for Medical ambulatory care my husband was due his feed.

This is important to be timely due to his low threshold to seizure and this is his only way of getting nourishment and fluids. Twice I asked with reasonable intervals between for a space to do this due to the dignity of my husband and infection control.

After a considered wait I had to leave the waiting area and proceed to a quiet outdoor area in order to give this essential fluid and feed. This request was not unreasonable and certainly not in an effort to jump a queue. I am horrified that clinical staff would be happy for a palliative and vulnerable patient who has a low seizure threshold to be left with no other option than to have his essential medical needs to be taken care of outside.
