"Nasal gastric feeding"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

We attended Wishaw General Hospital on the advice of our doctor as my husband was unwell. My husband is palliative and feeds through Nasal gastric. Due to the long waits for Medical ambulatory care my husband was due his feed.

This is important to be timely due to his low threshold to seizure and this is his only way of getting nourishment and fluids. Twice I asked with reasonable intervals between for a space to do this due to the dignity of my husband and infection control.

After a considered wait I had to leave the waiting area and proceed to a quiet outdoor area in order to give this essential fluid and feed. This request was not unreasonable and certainly not in an effort to jump a queue. I am horrified that clinical staff would be happy for a palliative and vulnerable patient who has a low seizure threshold to be left with no other option than to have his essential medical needs to be taken care of outside.

Dear Getloudforms,

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience. I was very sorry to read about the distressing situation you and your husband encountered during your visit, and I want to extend my sincere apologies for the difficulties you faced.

I fully appreciate how important it is for your husband, as a palliative patient with a naso- gastric feed and a low seizure threshold, to receive timely nutrition and hydration. It is deeply concerning to hear that despite your reasonable requests, you felt you had no option but to administer his feed outside the hospital building. This is not the standard of care or dignity we aim to provide, and I am truly sorry that you were placed in such a position.

Please be assured that your feedback has been taken very seriously. We are reviewing the circumstances surrounding your visit, including the availability of appropriate spaces for essential care needs and how staff respond to such requests. Your experience highlights an important area where we must do better, and we are committed to learning from this to ensure that no other patient or family member is left feeling unsupported in such a vulnerable moment.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. Your voice is vital in helping us improve the care we provide.

Warm regards,

Julie.
