"Cardiac Rehabilitation"

About: Causeway Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

Having a heart attack while on holiday, got wife to take me to the Causeway Hospital.

I didn’t think the triage nurse took it too seriously, as all they did was take my blood pressure and heart rate, but as my daughter was a health professional, she told my wife to get me back onto triage.

I was then taken through and wired up for an ECG but within 10 minutes I had a cardiac arrest, I was shocked and CPR administered after which I was blue lighted to Altnagelvin Hospital for an emergency operation where two stents were inserted.

Hello Happy Overall

My name is Victoria McCrory and I am the Assistant Clinical Services Manager for Causeway ED. I am very sorry to hear that you have recently been unwell and had to attend the ED for assessment, treatment and further referral.

I am sorry to hear that you feel that the triage nurse did not take your presenting concerns seriously. This does not align with the trust core values nor the standards of care which I expect to be upheld within the dept.

The triage process is designed to take a short synopsis of the presenting concern, check initial observations and ensure patients are assigned a category suitable to their clinical acuity identifying those who require urgent assessment by an ED clinician. The triage process is then promptly followed by completion of relevant investigations, including bloods and ECG where indicated.

I am glad to hear following further concerns being raised by your family that you were seen promptly, and urgent care was delivered which contributed to a positive outcome. I hope you continue to make a strong recovery.

I will ensure that learning from your concerns are shared within the dept via safety brief and staff meetings. All feedback is appreciated as it helps drive service improvement and informs learning within the dept.

Yours Sincerely

Victoria McCrory

ACSM CAU ED
