"My mothers jouney with dementia"

About: Care at home / Irvine and Kilwinning Day Services General practices in Ayrshire & Arran Health & Community Care Services / Dementia Support Health & Community Care Services / Locality social work teams

(as a relative),

My mum was diagnosed with dementia in Jan 22 . The care she received from medical staff surrounding the dementia diagnosis was exemplary.  As a family we were helped and advised about accessing different services to help mum.

This then led to the need for at home carers which was facilitated by Kilbirnie Social work department (Lorraine).  The help and understanding we received was outstanding, organising carers and day care services at Gowanlea Day Centre in Kilbirnie .  The Care at home staff and Gowanlea provided a service which was truly a life saver for out family and mum and something we are truly grateful for.

In mid 2024 mum's health deteriorated really quickly and palliative care was very suddenly the only outcome .  The help, understanding and support we received from Dalry Health Centre along with Kilbirnie Social work and the Care at home team was what i can only describe as phenomenal. The carers went above and beyond to make mum comfortable and ensure her final days in her own home were pain free and dignified.  Doctors, nurses and social workers staff dealt with us efficiently and with empathy, which we will be forever grateful for.

In summary the treatment from start to finish was joined up and an example of how effectively at home care can work . Thank you so much to everyone involved .

Dear Elizabetb

Firstly, please accept my sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of your mother. It is an extremely difficult time when we lose a loved one however I am heartened to hear that this difficult time was made somewhat easier by the amazing care and support your mother received throughout her journey with dementia and during her final days.

I respond on behalf of Primary Care and it would be my pleasure to share your thanks with Dalry Medical Practice.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share the health care experience of your late mother. We always strive to provide person centred care in any situation. I am so very glad that your mother experienced this and was able to be comfortable at home with her family in her final days.

Please accept my best wishes to you and your family. Thank you once again for taking the time to post this lovely feedback.

Kind regards

Danielle
