"Delay on Day Surgery operation"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

I completed pre-assessment though the ELSIE App and attendance at Hairmyres Hosptal. I was then informed in a message posted by a nurse that my Kidney stone operation at Monklands Day Surgery admission time had been changed from 7:30am to the earlier time of 7:00am.

Having fasted overtime, I arrived on time at 7 am and was assessed by the staff and asked to sit in the waiting room from 7:30am. Three hours later at 12:30 I had been given no update and was in a lot of pain, as a result of my ongoing disability of chronic spinal nerve damage.

I asked for permission to take my own Tramadol pain relief and for an update on my operation time. A further 2 hours passed with no update and I had to lie on the children’s area bean bags to get pain relief from sitting for hours.

I again approached nursing staff for an update and they phoned theatre. I was then told they were finishing previous patient and should be taken within the next 30 mins. I was eventually taken after 3pm, some 9 hours after leaving home and in severe pain.

The surgery staff did not understand why I had been asked to arrive at 7am as I was fourth on the list and should have been given a much later time.

After the operation I was kept in overnight with a temporary stent fitted.

As I suffer from chronic pain and also being diabetic, I find this waiting time after fasting overnight totally unacceptable.

Dear empathyxp56,

Thank you for sharing your experience of University Hospital Monklands, Day Surgery.

I am sorry to hear that the experience you had was not the positive one you would have expected. I can only imagine how frustrating the lack of update was regarding when you would be taken, and how upsetting this must have been given the pain you were in and that you had been fasting for so long.

I will pass your comments on to the manager for reflection and to help prevent this happening to others in future. Emergencies do happen, but communication around this is key and if there was a delay that should have been told to you.

I hope your surgery went well and that you are recovering well.

Best Wishes,

Jenni
