"Delay on Day Surgery operation"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

I completed pre-assessment though the ELSIE App and attendance at Hairmyres Hosptal. I was then informed in a message posted by a nurse that my Kidney stone operation at Monklands Day Surgery admission time had been changed from 7:30am to the earlier time of 7:00am.

Having fasted overtime, I arrived on time at 7 am and was assessed by the staff and asked to sit in the waiting room from 7:30am. Three hours later at 12:30 I had been given no update and was in a lot of pain, as a result of my ongoing disability of chronic spinal nerve damage.

I asked for permission to take my own Tramadol pain relief and for an update on my operation time. A further 2 hours passed with no update and I had to lie on the children’s area bean bags to get pain relief from sitting for hours.

I again approached nursing staff for an update and they phoned theatre. I was then told they were finishing previous patient and should be taken within the next 30 mins. I was eventually taken after 3pm, some 9 hours after leaving home and in severe pain.

The surgery staff did not understand why I had been asked to arrive at 7am as I was fourth on the list and should have been given a much later time.

After the operation I was kept in overnight with a temporary stent fitted.

As I suffer from chronic pain and also being diabetic, I find this waiting time after fasting overnight totally unacceptable.
