"Next of Kin not informed of death"

About: Colchester General Hospital

My brother died age 52 on a ward of a heart attack a week after kidney cancer treatment. I was not informed for 19 days that he had died. I didn't know he was in hospital as he didn't want to worry me after dad was ill treated in Colchester Hospital in 2001. Dad had terrible bed sores and wasn't fed or given fluids and I sat at his bedside nearly all day and watched the staff ignore him at meal times. His mouth was so dry I thought his lips were peeling. I never took all my complaints further as the staff just talked their way out of it all. Tried complaining through PALS and found them to be very unhelpful and covering matters up.

I apologise you’ve not had a good patient experience. We try really hard to improve our services based on the comments we receive from our patients, their relatives or carers. We would like the opportunity to discuss your experiences more fully and to apologise in person. If you are willing I would appreciate it if I could ask the matron to contact you. Could you email me, using the reference “RDEE4-Colchester General Hospital at 12/12/2013 16:05:59”, please? Many thanks Paul Searle, Head of Communications Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust info@colchesterhospital.nhs.uk
