I recently attended an appointment with my husband to see a specialist, following my husband's prostate cancer diagnosis, and had been referred for a consultation about a radical prostatectomy.
The specialist did not engage in much eye contact, and concentrated more on their computer screen, looking at statistics and bar charts.
Luckily I understood what the specialist was trying to say, but their manner was, in my opinion, dismissive, and more focused on their outcomes.
My husband, as the specialist pointed out, is obese, but is actively working on losing weight, and this was not acknowledged. He came away from the consultation feeling demoralised and embarrassed.
Musgrove Park Hospital, where his treatment is being co-ordinated, have been excellent, in particular CNS Milly and Miss Cannon, his urologist.
I felt there was no compassion during his consultation with the specialist, they may be an excellent surgeon, but I feel their communication skills may be lagging behind that.
"I felt there was no compassion"
