My 89 year old father stays in sheltered housing. He suffered a stroke and spent 10 weeks in Wishaw hospital and is now wheelchair bound. My 87 year old mother has recently been through cancer treatment. On his return home it was obvious he would require adaptions to be made to the property as there is a 2 inch threshold on the door and two steps to get outside. Despite repeated pleas regarding this nothing has been done. Initially they were told he would need to be assessed for 6 weeks which have long since come and gone, however then told this was wrong and now told they need to rehab him for up to a year as this is his best chance of recovery before any consideration would be given to adaptions and even then it would be unlikely. He is effectively a prisoner in his own home. There are numerous houses in the complex which have ramps and doors without thresholds. We have even been told that there a ramp in a nearby property that is not required, when queried about moving it we were told it would cost money and wouldn’t be considered.
He is also being wiped down over the toilet as he is unable to access the bath in the property. A wet room is required to allow him to have a decent wash, again this request has been ignored. To be put through this stress at 89 years old is unacceptable and clearly having an effect on their mental wellbeing. The word that we keep hearing is unfortunate. It is very unfortunate that at 89 years old he cannot have a proper wash or get out for some fresh air. Very unfortunate indeed!
"Despite repeated pleas nothing has been done."
