"They immediately made me feel at ease"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Maternity care / Gynae Rapid Access Clinic (GRACE)

(as the patient),

I was treated in the GRACE clinic (Craigavon Area Hospital) today for hyperemesis gravidarum.

My experience from start to finish was outstanding. After a long 13 hour wait in A&E with very little resolve, I was welcomed by Katie (who I think is the lead nurse) and Providence, one of the nurses. I was exhausted, emotional and starving and they immediately made me feel at ease, and started to treat me quickly. I should note that I was a last minute add on and I was really impressed at how organised everyone was.

I was there for 5 hours - it's quite a small area, but the staff communicate very sensitively with women and take care to maintain privacy as much as possible. They are personable and kind - everything you would want when feeling sick and vulnerable.

I left a different woman and feel so much relief knowing this service is available should I need it again. It is a day clinic but if it was available 24 hours, it would benefit so many more women - such an essential service which takes pressure off other areas!

This service is an absolute credit and the staff deserve all the praise! Thank you so much to Katie and Providence specifically.

Good Afternoon DC632

My name is Nicola and I am the Sister in charge of GRACE.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of your time in GRACE. I sincerely hope you are still feeling better and that your Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) hasn't returned.

GRACE was set up as a one stop assessment and management clinic for patients and also to allow patients to be referred from ED. The HG protocol allows patients like yourself to get treated outside ED and then go home feeling much better! I'm delighted to hear this pathway has worked for you. I'm also glad it brings you comfort to know the service is available to you in the future. I am very pleased to hear you were treated with sensitivity and compassion as this is what the team strive to deliver.

It would be wonderful to be able to offer a 24 hour service but unfortunately this is not within our reach at the present time.

I will ensure your kind words get passed onto both Specialist Nurse Katie and Staff Nurse Providence.

Thank you again and I hope you continue to feel well throughout your pregnancy. Don't hesitate to call GRACE on 02837563052 if you need further support.

Best wishes

Nicola
