My aunt is in her 90s and lives alone. She was recently discharged home from hospital last week with very poor mobility. I had voiced concerns in hospital to staff who tried to convince my aunt respite could be arranged. My aunt is fiercely independent and wanted home so was discharged with a care plan.
On arriving home it was clearly evident it wasn’t going to work. The ambulance had been called a number of times in the first few days due to falls, my aunt was not able to go to the toilet unassisted and there were many accidents.
Janice, the community physio from the BHSCT community discharge team, came out to do an assessment, and it was decided my aunt was not safe to stay at home without wrap around care. Options were explored by Janice, my aunt and me and all agreed respite would be the best option.
Janice was proactive and committed to get my aunt into respite. Despite it being a bank holiday wkd, Janice was able to step my aunt up and organised respite care. She also organised transport to a local nursing home and helped sort medications.
Janice worked over her scheduled hours and was extremely professional and compassionate throughout the ordeal. Without Janice’s input the situation would have escalated and it would have been even more stressful and frightening for my aunt and family.
"Extremely professional and compassionate"
