"7 week family therapy group for parents"

About: Children and Young People Services / Child and Adolescent Mental Services

(as a parent/guardian),

I was invited to attend this group and I am so glad that I did. The feeling that you are not the only one struggling with our young person's behaviour is very reassuring. The help and understanding that we received from Ursula and Dion was brilliant. It gave me a new way to parent and to think about my reaction to situations, how to look at things in a different way and choose different words. The OT Margaret, who attended two sessions, was fantastic in the way that she got us to see how the young people are feeling.

I think it is a really important course to offer. We are all doing our best and sending our young persons to different groups, OT sessions and counselling which they need, but this course is for the parent who also needs help/support/advice which is not so readily available. I have described it as a life line for me. The connections that the parents made were genuine and hopefully we will continue to support each other now that the course is over.

One of the main things to come out of all of this is that we all need to practise self care and to give ourselves permission to actually do it.

If anyone reading this is offered a place, please accept, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Hello

Thank you for taking the time to share your story regarding the 7 week Family Therapy Group facilitated by Ursula and Dione (Family Therapists). Both Ursula and Dione give careful consideration in planning the programme and you have provided really good feedback. Hopefully with the positivity that you have experienced it can help others to want to attend future groups. Margaret (OT) had a valuable contribution to the group and by empowering parents or those with parental responsibility with helpful advice and support it means that you are better equipped to manage situations as they arise.

Many times parents do not get the time to practice self-care and I am glad that you felt that this was really important and helpful for you. I am hearing from your story that the group really got on well together and that you will all continue to support each other from time to time. I will pass on your story on to Ursula, Dione and Margaret and I would like to wish you well and hopefully you will continue to use the skills that you have learnt during the programme.

Regards

Shirley Dennison
