I had a stroke 35 years ago which meant I had to give up my farm and move home. I couldn't talk for 5 years after my stroke and still have word finding difficulties now. My right arm and leg are affected from my stroke but I was managing well at home until I recently had a fall in my bathroom where I injured myself. I was admitted to University Hospital Wishaw and Kello Hospital following a pelvic fracture.
I went home with 4 carers and I was using a stedy to transfer. I had physiotherapy from the Integrated Community Support Team in Carluke where Nicole, Lee, and Amy helped me.
Being listened to
We spoke about what I wanted, which was to get back to using my zimmer to walk rather than using the stedy. I wanted to make my right arm move better. I wanted to use my toilet rather than use the commode in my living room. I wanted to get to hospital appointments with my family rather than rely on ambulance transport.
Staff attitude
I always laughed a lot during our sessions. I was grateful for their help.Explanations
The staff took time to explain things to me.Being given time
Because I have trouble finding my words and speaking, the staff always gave me time to communicate.
"I was grateful for their help"
