In December 2023 I was told my prostate didn't feel like it should for size and structure. In January 2024 it was confirmed I had prostate cancer.
I decided to go for surgery and was very unexpectedly called at the end of March 2024 there was an opening in a theatre on in early April. Of cause I accepted this offer. On the day I arrived at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where I was told I was the first patient for a prostatectomy that day. In preparation I was asked a list of questions by different people. I didn't see my surgeon but one of his associates (who couldn't answer all of my questions). The first time I saw the surgeon was in the scrub room. And that was only very briefly as I was given anaesthetic very quickly. The next thing I know is that I am in recovery, where I'm told I have been in theatre an hour longer than expected. No clue why. After a while the surgeon arrived at my bed and told me that the operation went well. That is the only thing I remember, all the other information was lost in the post-op fog.
The day after the surgery a young lady came into my room and introduced herself as an associate of the surgeon. Followed by the surgeon is happy with the outcome, you can go home, after which she immediately left. No checking of the wounds (two of them still bleeding), no "do you have any questions". And I was to flabbergasted to ask anyhow. I still don't know what happened to cause that extra hour. I can't be the only one with this experience and I would strongly suggest to let an associate to the post-op talk in recovery and let the surgeon himself to the talk the day afterwards, when the patient is fully conscious and can grasp / remember what is being told.
I have to wait till the end of May to speak to (yet another) consultant who will give me the result of the biopsy of the tumour. I don't know if he can tell me the story of my surgery.
