"I couldn’t have asked for a more efficiently, effective, caring and dedicated service"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I had a few days of post menopausal spotting and as this wasn’t normal for me I went to my GP and was fast tracked through the Post menopausal bleeding clinic. I had an internal examination at my GP surgery and all was fine regarding that. I was then sent a few days later for an ultrasound and pelvic ultrasound where some thickening of the womb lining was noticed.

I then had an appointment for a hysteroscopy, and having scoured social media groups about the procedure I rang to cancel my appointment as was terrified of the horror stories I’d read about this. I then got another appointment the same week at the gynaecologist clinic at my local hospital.

I attended this appointment and thought it was to discuss the findings of the initial ultrasound. I was greeted by my consultant Dr Mangal and her team Stephanie, Hannah, Emma and Tina.

I sat down and and Dr Mangal went through my results explaining I had some thickening of the lining of the womb and although it was likely to be normal for me or down to HRT I was on, it was best to get it checked out by having the quick hysteroscopy just to be safe.

I initially said I didn’t want the procedure and asked if I came off the HRT would I then be able to have another ultrasound to see if the thickness of the lining had decreased. Dr Mangal said this was possible but it would prolong the whole process and if it still came back as having thickening of the womb lining I’d still have to have the hysteroscopy. She said I could have the procedure under general anaesthetic but at that point I decided to pull up my big girl pants and have it done there and then!

This was a huge decision for me to make as I had worked myself up into such a state of panic about the procedure I was physically shaking.

I can’t tell you how much the team made me turn around my decision. They were absolutely wonderful. So calming and caring. They made me feel completely in control and I have to say the procedure was less traumatic than any cervical screening I’ve ever had! It was over in minutes and that was with a sample taken as well! I was shown the TV as they called it 😁 with the cameras images and chatted to throughout the process. I was constantly asked if I was OK.

Before I knew it, it was all done and I was back dressed and chatting with the Dr about what she’d seen from her medical point of view. I had a very small polyp and that was what had made the lining of my womb appear thicker.

I may need to have this removed at some stage but again she fully explained the procedure and personally I would have no issue whatsoever in having this done in future.

We hear every week about how the NHS doesn’t work and all that’s wrong with it. However I couldn’t have asked for a more efficiently, effective, caring and dedicated service. I want to give a huge shout out and praise for Dr Mangal and her team at Grantham, Lincolnshire Hospital women’s services, Gynaecology department.

They went over and above to ensure I had this vital procedure. Their care and empathy were outstanding and the difference between me having it or not !

I can’t thank them enough for giving me some peace of mind, something I’ve not had for a good few weeks.

This is NHS at its finest!

Dear Melanie395

Thank you so much or taking the time to leave this wonderful feedback for our team following your recent visit to gynaecology outpatients at Grantham Hospital. As a team we appreciate how worrying it can be having to attend our clinic. It is lovely to hear that the staff were able to make you feel at ease and gave you the care and reassurance you required during your procedure. I will share your kind words with the whole team.

Kind Regards
