"It was her compassion and empathy that I remember most"

About: Royal Jubilee Maternity services

(as a service user),

Unfortunately I had the need to contact the department in September 2022 which was as it transpired in regards to my first miscarriage.  I was concerned about some spotting and spoke to a lovely midwife named Jamie.

I was asked to attend the department and given a date and time to be seen.  During this time the fact that it was indeed a miscarriage became evident and due to levels of blood loss I was kept for observation for a short time.

Jamie took such care with my husband and I as she sensitively confirmed that there was no heartbeat.  The words that she used and the way in which she spoke to us made the worst news imaginable a little bit easier to take. In that darkest of moments it was her compassion and empathy that I remember most.

Jamie gave us useful information on support available to take home and let us know if there were any concerns to get back in touch.

Physically I recovered from the loss and when we received another positive pregnancy test we were anxious but hopeful.  Sadly this also turned out to be our second miscarriage where this time I would receive medical management and I would also be seen by Jamie.

Whether by luck or not this continuity of care would prove absolutely invaluable to me. I came to trust Jamie and have her deliver the news of no heartbeat for the second time was devastating but handled extremely professionally and compassionately with a real appreciation of our history.

Within a few months I would experience a further two losses which I did not attend EPU for, however when I became pregnant for a fifth time I called and spoke with Jamie.  I was booked for an early scan at which a heartbeat was confirmed. I was offered 2 weekly scans which I was so grateful for. One of these scans was performed by another midwife whose name I unfortunately did not record but whose care was also exemplary.

Finally I was able to move from EPU’s care when I attended my 12-week booking scan.  Even at this stage Jamie’s professionalism and ability to know what to say and the words to use sticks with me. It was exactly what we needed and we will be eternally grateful.

I have now given birth to a healthy little boy and the care that we have received to get to this stage will never be forgotten.

Thank you so much.
