"Only one Doctor and very long waiting times"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Ophthalmology

(as a carer),

The appointment was for late afternoon. When we arrived, the nurses tested mum's eyes and were very patient with her. She then had a scan. We then had to wait to see the doctor, and the nurses became increasingly concerned about the length of time we had to wait. They gave us some water and biscuits as we had been waiting so long. Mum is in her early 90s  has recently been bereaved and is also awaiting the full details of a CT scan which was prompted by a diagnosis of breast cancer just a couple of weeks ago. She became very tired. We eventually, more than 2 hours later, we got in to see the doctor who was very thorough. The doctor apologised for keeping us waiting so long.

My mum then had an eye injection as she suffers from quite advanced macro-degeneration. We eventually left Ophthalmology Dept. We were grateful the doctor was so thorough, and we would not expect him to know the individual details of each patient, but for my mother, the waiting time and the whole process generally was almost too much to cope with. She normally goes to bed in the very early evening,  but on this day she had to go home and have her evening meal before she was able to crawl into bed. I noticed that the doctor had to rush off at the end while the nurses, who I discovered had been there since 07:30, had to give the injection and close the department down before they could leave. I suggest that the consultation could either be quicker, or that more than one doctor should be on duty.

Dear Linda234,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback for the Eye Unit.

I am very sorry to hear about your Mum's breast diagnosis and completely understand why the experience with us in Ophthalmology with the wait being so long was hard for her to cope with. However I am pleased that your Mum had a thorough examination and had the treatment required for her eye condition.

Thank you for your suggestions of ways to help, I will pass your feedback to our manager and service manager.

Thank you,

Kerry Trembath
